Crew Member Discloses Depression Following Deluge of Backlash Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her battle with depression after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also included high-profile passengers.
The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, describing a check-in call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the journey.
She described the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her scientific research and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her roots – was overshadowed under the tide of sexist vitriol.
She is widely recognized for her pioneering work protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Now, eight months after reaching space, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the followers whose support were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she said.
She added that amid the criticism, considerable good had come out of the flight, including elevated attention for her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
Flight Details
The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that passed the Kármán line of outer space.
The team of pioneers also included leaders in multiple disciplines.
The enterprise behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a Amazon founder.
